Meeting notes: Mark your calendars for the June 20th PHAN picnic in the park

June 20th Picnic in the Park: Help wanted

Our second annual Picnic in the Park Summer Celebration will be held June 20 at Knott Park. We’ve received a $4,000 grant for the events, so we’ll be able to do more extensive promotions this year.

We could use more help with logistics, coordinating with Sacramento Middle School and the various partner groups, shopping for refreshments, etc. So if anyone is looking for an opportunity to get involved, get in touch via officers@parkroseheights.org

Star Wars movie night May 4

We're doing another May the 4th event this year with a screening of the Empire Strikes Back at 5pm at Parkrose United Methodist.

  2. Treasurer’s Report
    • Klint Finley
      • We have been awarded a grant from D1C that will generously cover costs for communications and advertising for our Picnic in the Park scheduled for June 20th.
        • Plans for flyers, home mailers, lawn signs and possibly a banner for the 122nd pedestrian bridge have started.
      • We still have funds left from Metro to use on neighborhood clean-up efforts.
      • We submitted our Portland Parks application for use of Knott Park on June 20th. It is possible that we will not be charged for site rental if the city is still honoring the one free event per year for neighborhood associations.
  3. D1C Report
    • The District One Coalition of Neighborhoods meets the first Wednesday of each month. PHAN aspires to send two representatives to each meeting and update our neighborhood about the greater community events and concerns.
    • Jamie Dunphy spoke to the D1C about the $169M cut in the city budget which will be hitting the Office of Community and Civic Life hard. This includes resources and support for the D1C and neighborhood associations.
      • There are a series of changes within the OCC that are driving the new budget deficit concerns.
      • With the closure of Fred Meyers Gateway and the eminent closure of the Grocery Outlet on Sandy, the Parkrose Heights and surrounding neighborhoods are becoming a “food desert”. Other notable business closures and possible closures include Dollar Tree Mall 205 and the Ross Dress for Less at Gateway.
  4. Community
    • Picnic in the Park is scheduled for June 20th in Knott Park. HELP WANTED: We are seeking neighborhood folks interested in volunteering to assist with logistics and organization of this fun neighborhood event. Vendors and Entertainment also needed.
    • Not much participation in our January food drive or our Spring Fling in March. More advertising may be key. We will attempt another food drive soon.
    • The April neighborhood cleanup was postponed until May 30th 9-11am
      • This is also the date of the Jr. Rose Parade.
    • We are moving forward with a new community bulletin board that will be positioned in front of David’s Harp community garden and the little street library on Knott St.
  5. Bylaws
    • The new PHAN Bylaws were approved by a vote 8-0, President Fred Bonte was not required to vote as a tie-breaker was not needed.
  6. Upcoming events
    • ELECTION at May 12 Meeting: We are adding a VP to our board. The candidate for consideration is Kris Brown, a very active, long time resident of Parkrose Heights.
    • May the Fourth Be With You! Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back
      • May 4th 5pm at the Parkrose United Methodist Church
    • May 30 Neighborhood Clean Up 9-11am
  7. Meeting adjourned at 8:00pm
