June event in the park canceled; Join us in August instead!

Here are notes from last month's Parkrose Heights Association of Neighbors meeting. The big news is that we're canceling the June picnic in the park event in favor of the August Neighbors Night Out event.

Also: Our next meeting is next week, on Tuesday June 9th at Parkrose United Methodist.

Meeting minutes for Tuesday, May 12th 2025—7:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Anna Bonte took notes, since Barbara cannot be at meeting

Officers present were Fred Bonte (President) and Klint Finley (Treasurer)until he needed to leave (not feeling well)
and Newly elected VP – Kris Brown

  • 1. Welcome and Introductions
    • Fred called the meeting to order, and everyone went around the table and introduced themselves.
  • 2. Election of new Vice President for the association
    • Fred explained that we needed a vice president for the board.
      • Candidate: Kris Brown
      • Vote needed
      • The vote was made to elect Kris as the VP and it was seconded. It was overwhelmingly yes and Kris Brown is our new Vice President of the Parkrose Heights Association of Neighbors.
  • 3. Treasurer’s Report
    • Klint Finley
    • Presentation of financial updates and status.
      • Klint gave us an update on our financials.
      • We are looking good.
      • Since we decided not to do the Picnic In The Park in June, we are going to work with District 1 to see if the grant we received can be used for a National Night Out Event. Otherwise, we can return the funds and reapply for another event.
    • Resiliancy grant from D1C
    • Use funds for new bulletin board (communication)
    • We are eligible to apply for an resiliacy grant from District One to communicate information to the neighborhood.
    • Vote needed
    • We voted on using the resiliency grant for Fred to build a community bulletin board in front of the community garden at David’s Harp next to Parkrose United Methodist Church. The vote was made and seconded. It was unanimously yes.
  • 4. D1C Report
    • The District One Coalition of Neighborhoods meets the first Wednesday of each month. PHAN aspires to send two representatives to each meeting and update our neighborhood about the greater community events.
    • Karen and Alison were present to represent District One.
    • They said there are a lot of changes happening in the city. They are trying to work with Amanda Garcia Snell (community engagement offices for the City of Portland) to create a plan for the coalitions, but it is not getting traction.
    • Our group showed appreciation for all that District One has done for our Association.
  • 5. Event Updates 2026
    • May the Fourth- family films
      • Our May The Fourth Movie was fun, but there were only 5 people who attended. We are looking for ways to get our events better advertised.
    • Litter Patrol: moved to May 30th 10am to 12 pm
    • Barb looking into getting a smaller dumpster? Placement?
      • The Pick-up/Drop-off for tools, supplies, etc will be at 11943 NE Morris St. between the hours of 10am and 12noon on Saturday, May 30.
  • 6. Community Input
    • Open floor for questions, comments, and feedback from neighbors
      • The Big question is how can we better advertise our events. Facebook is a good start, but we need the community bulletin board and more.
      • Scott Rau, from Councilor Smith’s office says it takes time. A Newsletter would be great if we had an email distribution list.
      • The most important thing is to find needs in the neighborhood and the Neighborhood Association can find ways to meet those needs.
      • An old fashioned mailer with information about the neighborhood and a list of events is still the best way to get information out.
      • Allison from District One says they can help with the mailer.
  • 7. Upcoming events
    • Next PHAN meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 9th
      • Our big event for 2026 is going to be the National Night Out/Party of Portland Event.
      • We want to do it at Knott Park
      • Advertising is crucial
      • There is also interest in doing another Chili Cookoff and Fall Movie.
  • 8. Meeting will adjourn at 8:00pm promptly
    • The meeting adjourned at 8pm
