Events and minutes from August PHAN meeting

A few quick notes before the minutes:

  1. It doesn't look like we're going to be able to reschedule the summer Picnic in the Park event, which we had to cancel/postpone due to the weather, so the October 10th chili cook-off event is going to be our big event for this year. This is your chance to mingle with your neighbors, show off your chili cooking skills, or just try some tasty chili. Saturday, October 10, 5pm-7pm, at Parkrose United Methodist Church
  2. Councilor Loretta Smith's monthly Coffee with a Cop meeting this month will feature a discussion with Public Safety Support Specialist (PS3) and Portland Street Response to help neighbors learn more about what each group does and what the differences are between the two. Friday, August 21 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM Our Just Future10550 NE Halsey St.
  3. Our next Neighborhood Clean-up is scheduled for Sunday, September 27th 11am-2pm, location TBD.

Minutes from August 11 PHAN meeting:

  1. Treasurer’s Report
    • Due to the August 4th Picnic in the Park being cancelled (extreme heat/smoke) we have about $2,500 in grant money that needs to be spent on community building/ communication. There is not an apparent deadline for the funds. We have other funds for use for the new Bulletin Board that will be placed on Knott St next to the little street library in front of Davids Harp.
    • We could also use the money for a second flyer mailing to the neighborhood.
  2. D1C Report-
    • The District One Coalition of Neighborhoods meets the first Wednesday of each month. PHAN aspires to send two representatives to each meeting and update our neighborhood about the greater community events.
    • We are currently looking for a second representative to attend these very important community meetings.
    • Karen was present from DC1 and although there was no general meeting for August, there was Leadership meeting held on August 1st.
      • Sumner NA is starting “Merch” sales of T-shirts, stickers, buttons etc boosting Sumner Neighborhood pride. We could do the same.
        • Perhaps a neighborhood wide art contest for the T-shirt design? We do need to develop a logo that is representative of Parkrose Heights. Jennifer has a button maker and we could supply her with the materials and the larger button frame to make buttons.
  • Decidedly, we definitely need to increase the visibility of our Neighborhood Association so that people in our community can be informed about what we are doing and become involved.
  • A new Instagram account for PHAN is in the works.
  • We will be creating a new QR code to add to the newsletter and new yard signs.
  1. Event Updates 2026
    • School is Out- Summer activities
      • Explore Your Park August 28th 11am-1pm
    • Neighbors Night Out Tuesday, August 4th Cancelled due to smoke and heat
      • Next year contingency plan? Space rental? Sacramento ES?
    • Neighborhood Clean up
      • Our next Neighborhood Clean-up is scheduled for Sunday, September 27th
        • 11am-2pm
      • Sacramento Elementary clean-up:
        • Sacramento has contacted us regarding a beautification project at the school. They are thinking plantings in the front beds or assistance with an established garden in the back. Perhaps a mural on the one playground?
    • Fall events Check in
      • Chili Cook-off October 10th 5-7pm
        • This is our favorite event next to Pancake V. Waffle
        • More detailed info to come
      • Table at events to generate interest
      • Trunk or Treat
        • Waiting to contact “Elevate” when school starts
  2. Community Input:
    • PBOT is planning to do major work on 122nd to improve pedestrian accessibility and safety but there are several serious concerns regarding the placement of medians and curb planters at Russell St that would prohibit left hand turns onto Russell from 122nd.
    • There are concerns regarding the newly placed BikeTown bike rack at 102nd and Morris St. being too far out into the street. Pair this with the curb enhancements at the same location.
    • On Friday, August 21st, Councilor Smith will be holding a Coffee with a Cop and Community discussion from 9:00am-11:00am.
      • There will be representatives from PS3 and Portland Street Response
      • 10550 NE Halsey Street Our Just Future
